Years ago, a child was born to a powerful lord. This childs mother however, was not the wife of the lord, but a geisha the lord had an affair with. The lords wife found out about her husbands infidelity, and the child. The wife was furious with her husband, and demanded he kill the child. Knowing that his family would see this situation as dishonorable, and his father would demand he commit seppuku. The lord knew what he had to do.
The lord would not kill his son. He found a ronin named Tatsuya, and payed him handsomely to take the child far away. Unfortunatly, somehow the lords wife found out the child wasn’t dead. Now the wife gave her husband an ultimatum. Kill the geisha, or she would let his family know about his infidelity. Under the threat of hara-kiri, the lord did what he felt he had to do. The geisha died easily, the poison put her to sleep and silently ended her life.
The ronin Tatsuya had no interest in keeping this child. He decided to take him to a monastery and leave him. The lord and geisha gave the child a name, but Tatsuya didn’t remember it, and he needed something to call him on his way across Rokugan. He called the boy Sanjuro. Tatsuya travled a long way with Sanjuro. By the time Tatsuya got to the monastery, he realized something. He had grown a fondness for this child. Tatsuya decided he would keep little Sanjuro, raise him as his own, and teach him to be a great swordsman.
